Sitat
Ahead of Joey Barton's scheduled twitter announcement over his future, the club released a statement on Monday afternoon confirming that the player had been transfer -listed and is available on a free.

Barton himself then responded by tweeting:

Somewhere in those high echelons of NUFC, they have decided I am persona non grata. I am on a free but the honour of wearing those B+W stripes, surpasses that.

One day the board might realise, what the shirt signifies. HONOUR and PRIDE. Thanks for your continued support..

It's fair to say that the writing has been on the wall since three days after the end of last season, when Barton's agent was summoned to SJP and told that no contract offer was on the table for his client.

Willie Mackay said then that: "I think that the only way Joey will stay at Newcastle is if there are new owners. I don't think there's a problem with the manager - the decision seems to have been taken above Alan Pardew."

Within hours of that Barton had opened up a twitter account and posted his views on a variety of subjects including his Magpies future, which while understandable given his frustrations hardly seemed like the most logical move to us and a potential petrol/matches combination.

Included in our opening pre-season game at Darlington - and scoring within three minutes - Joey was refused entry to the USA ahead of United's transatlantic tour and joined the club's Dutch reserve tour.

Sunday then saw him included in the first team starting XI at Leeds, receiving more support from the travelling fans but losing out on the captain's armband to Shola Ameobi, in the absence of club captain Fabricio Coloccini.

And whilst not quite replicating his infamous "Carroll stays" comments from January, Alan Pardew's recent media mentions of Barton underline the fact that he's out of the loop as far as making real decisions is concerned.

Barely a week ago, Pardew told reporters that:

"I think Joey will be here (next season). He's said all along he wants to stay and I want him to stay so there's no conflict. His contract may get resolved but probably not until it runs out.?

And by Friday, the return of Joey was being actively talked up, Pardew labeling him as a "technician" and "creative force" who would bring out the best in Demba Ba. At this rate there's really no point in him speaking..

So, a situation that has festered for over two months comes to a head less than a fortnight before we open up our league season. Good old Newcastle United.

That our first game sees us meet Arsenal at SJP is grimly ironic, given that last season's 4-4 draw on Tyneside was a prime example of Joey Barton's positive effectiveness: controlled aggression, coolness from the penalty spot, a refusal to give up the fight and inspiration to galvanise those around him on the field and in the stands.

In a word, spirit - the very thing that many fans were relying on Barton to provide this season following the departure of Kevin Nolan. His departure makes us look less United, less threatening and less competitive - in isolation cause for concern but as a whole, a massive worry.

And as to why Barton is available on a free, we're unable to come up with any logical explanation of that from either a footballing or financial point of view.

Having not asked for a move, Barton is entitled to a settlement on the remaining year of his existing contract, which in effect means that we've handed out two free transfers today - and the money earned from Swansea for Wayne Routledge will promptly disappear out of the club along with our number seven.

(To quantify the previous paragraph, newspaper reports of Monday's events have used expressions such as "rip up the remaining year of his contract" (Mail). However the official club statement made no reference of that, which to us means that a financial obligation remains to be either paid up - or fought over).

Due to the club's policy of non-communication of course, Barton gets a clear run to justify his stance and indulge in what is either a righteous show of indignation or some cyber badge-kissing, content that only some coded messages will emerge in response via pals in the media.

And once secure in a new club with a new contract, he'll doubtless get a superior reception to that which will be afforded to Andy Carroll when he returns to SJP. As to whether he'll actually be any more deserving, you pays your money and you takes your choice....

Barton tweeted on Sunday: "sold? Not a chance matey. Am here till it expires or am given a free transfer..." The precise meaning of that certainly isn't clear to me.

Regardless of the morality of the situation or suspicions that Barton knowingly contributed to his exit, the main ramification for "those magnificent fans" he leaves behind is that our squad is weaker.

Having spoken about boosting his squad, Alan Pardew now has less proven Premiership talent at his disposal than when he arrived. The transfer window closes in 30 days.

PS: Shortly before the Barton announcement, United confirmed their reserve squad for Tuesday's game at Gateshead - with senior pros Steve Harper and Alan Smith both named. That's two more players who dared to voice an opinion (notably when Chris Hughton was discarded) and now look like they'll be next to walk the plank.

But the decision to finally transfer list Barton is understood to have been factored by the following:

The refusal to shake the manager?s hand after being told he hadn?t been appointed captain at Leeds.

The potential to be a bad influence on younger players in the dressing room, with several of the squad still under 21.

The impression created on United?s new signings and future signings of the club, some of which could be in place soon.

A rant during the warm-up at Leeds, at half-time and at full-time following the 3-2 defeat.

Barton?s dismay over the decision to allow new boy Yohan Cabaye take all of the corners and free-kicks during the game against Leeds.

If the club want to put out all these false statements via the Chronicle, then let them do that. Everyone here knows, I speak the truth.....

I also have too much respect for my teammates and the fans, to get in a tit for tat war with them. I have too much self-worth and dignity
