Mike Ashley has set a deadline for today for interested parties to improve their offer for Newcastle United.

The Daily Mail says Ashley has given Newcastle?s prospective buyers 24 hours to increase their offer by £10million ? or he will pull the plug on the takeover.
Sources close to the process believe Tyneside businessman Barry Moat and his backers are still more than £10m short of the valuation that has been set by Ashley, who originally demanded £100m for a venture that has already cost him in excess of £200m.
If the takeover happens, Moat intends to appoint Toon legend and fans? favourite Alan Shearer as manager but, if Ashley stays, he is expected to turn to David O?Leary.

O'Leary's fame at Leeds rests upon his promotion of a series of younger players, Jonathan Woodgate, Lee Bowyer, Alan Smith, Harry Kewell, Stephen McPhail, Eirik Bakke, Ian Harte and Danny Mills (signed for £4M from Charlton Athletic).

From the Guardian:

Amid vague talk of American backing for Barry Moat's putative bid for Newcastle United, a more plausible explanation is that the local nightclub mogul Allan Rankin would provide the finance for the deal. Moat and Rankin are long‑term business associates, sharing the boardroom of Moat's property investment firm Lugano Developments. They also shared directorships of a hotels and restaurants company, Boxpipe, for several years and the now‑dissolved Premier Books.

In April, Moat and Rankin incorporated a new company together and it bears all the hallmarks of a special-purpose vehicle for investment in something like a football club. They are the only directors of Tandem Bars (as in black-and-white stripes, geddit?) and are using the premises of the Newcastle law firm Mincoff Jacksons for this and several other joint ventures.

Mincoff Jacksons' senior partner, Howard Gold, yesterday claimed Tandem Bars had nothing to do with Moat's reported bid for Newcastle. But when invited to state categorically that Rankin was not involved in the purchase of the club, Gold refused, citing client confidentiality.

Rankin is the sole shareholder of Tandem Bars and, whereas many have questioned if Moat has the money to buy Newcastle ? his most famous business success was Billy the Big Mouth Bass ? Rankin probably does.

He was announced in 2003 as a £750m purchaser of 37 Thistle hotels from Orb Estates, but the deal fell through. Neither Moat nor Rankin, who is in Spain, returned calls yesterday.

Tyneside businessman Barry Moat has also been heavily linked with heading a consortium to take United off Ashley?s hands ? but has so far failed to come up with a financial package that comes close to tempting the Sports Direct entrepreneur.

Ashley?s PR people said today: ?As it stands the process is still ongoing, although it?s a slow process. As far as Mike is concerned, he either sells it or he doesn?t. Then he will make plans accordingly.?

And when pressed on Moat?s bid to take the club on, a representative of the Ashley camp said: ?Barry Moat is not in the driving seat. There are still others out there but nothing is likely to be resolved before Saturday?s game with Reading.?

The concerns for United fans, though, is that Chris Hughton?s already decimated squad could be slashed further by the time the transfer deadline on September 1 comes round.

Should Ashley be forced to stay on, he is likely to give Hughton, or any potential interim manager, the go-ahead to bring in new blood, and the former Spurs full-back has already had encouragement to bring in two young players in on loan from White Hart Lane.

Meanwhile, the agent of Jonas Gutierrez has refuted claims Olympiacos are keen on signing the Argentina winger.

Pedro Bravo Jimenez dismissed the claim, saying: ?Nobody from Olympiacos or any other club from Greece has been in touch with me about the player.

?There is no inquiry or offer. These reports are not true.?

Panathinaikos also dismissed reports that they were set to launch a bid for Gutierrez?s countryman and Newcastle team-mate Fabricio Coloccini.
