There is news in Metro today that Newcastle may be interested in free agent striker James Beattie.
James Beattie ? while at Rangers last season
33 year-old James Beattie seems to have lost his way over the last few years, and he was unable to earn a first team place at Stoke City, after joining them from Sheffield United in the summer of 2009.
Beattie was a Newcastle target of Bobby Robson,. back in the days when he was doing well at Southampton, and in 235 appearances for the south coast club he hit a decent 76 goals, but from what we can tell, the striker has been on a rapid decline over the last two or three years.
In two seasons at Stoke from 2008 through 2010 he made 40 appearances and scored 9 goals before joining Glasgow Rangers last summer.
But last season he failed to score in 10 appearances for the Scottish giants, and was sent out on loan to Blackpool from January, and he failed to score in 9 appearances for the Seasiders.
In August of last year James signed a two year deal at Rangers with an option of a third year, but after failing to make the side and having lots of injuries last season, Rangers terminated his contract last Wednesday, and issued this statement:
??A deal has been agreed with Beattie which terminates his contract and makes him a free agent.?
If Newcastle do sign James Beattie it will look like a panic move, and we think we have four better strikers already at Newcastle in Demba Ba, Best, Shola Ameobi and Peter Lovenkrands, , and five if we include young Sammy Ameobi.
He?s just not good enough for Newcastle United.
What do you think?
