NEWCASTLE boss Alan Shearer is wielding the axe at St James' Park ? with Dennis Wise the first casualty.
SunSport understands the Toon legend will move swiftly to get the club in order by removing the unpopular executive director.

Wise, 42, joined the club in January last year for a role in player transfers, scouting and youth development.
But the relationship with the Toon Army turned sour as they dubbed him, along with vice president Tony Jiminez, part of a 'cockney mafia' under club owner Mike Ashley.

Jiminez left Toon last October, while Wise stayed behind to work with new manager Joe Kinnear.

But with Kinnear now recovering from a quadruple heart bypass, Shearer has stepped in to the Newcastle hot seat and instantly rung the changes.

Wise's departure coincides with the appointment of former Crystal Palace boss Iain Dowie, who is set to join Shearer's coaching staff.

The sun artikkelen some er nevnt over.

PS: The intriguing possibility has emerged that the Shearer appointment is linked to a new investor in the club and he's been persuaded to take the position by someone other than Ashley and Llambias. The events of the coming days will doubtless prove or disprove that theory.

Kjekk teori men virker ikkje så veldig sannsynlig ut.

Newcastle United's celebrity supporters have been applauding the appointment of Magpies legend Alan Shearer as the new boss at St James' Park.

The striker who netted 148 goals for the Toon during his distinguished time at the club as a player has been handed the task of steering the club clear of the relegation zone and ensuring Newcastle's Premier League status.

Shearer may only be on a short-term contract until the end of the season but the move has delighted the club's celebrity supporters.

Sid Waddell, Sky Sports' renowned darts commentator believes that, although he would struggle over the course of a whole season Shearer will have the magic to guide Newcastle back up the table.

"I think it's a good move, a brilliant choice," he said. "Although he has got no experience with football management it is all hands to the pumps now.

"He wouldn't have been my choice at the start of the season because I think you've got to be very clever - like Sir Alex Ferguson or Arsene Wenger - to use your squad to its best advantage.

"But the fact we've got injuries, no real star players, except for Steven Taylor - and he's a full-back - and a lot of doubt means Shearer is a good choice."

Waddell believes that Newcastle have no real talent in their squad to compare with their former years and the club will need major investment this summer. "Michael Owen scores goals, but we need a character who can do more than score goals," he said.

"We've got nobody in line with Frank Lampard or Steven Gerrard or even deco. We've got a left back and that's about it.

"They should stand by Shearer this season and then they have to give him £100million quid in the summer to get the guys we need.

"We ain't going to get Lionel Messi but I'm not sure we need a broom cupboard full of Bartons and Nicky Butts.

"We need two guys like Peter Beardsley and Robert Lee."

Horse racing expert John McCririck was also fully behind the move, insisting Shearer has the motivational skills to inspire the struggling Magpies. "To bring Newcastle back to the glory days will take time," he said.

"The only objective now is to avoid relegation and if he can do that then everything else can wait.

"In the summer new players will come in and there will be huge turnover of players, whether we escape relegation or not.

"At the moment it is that inspiration, that dynamism, that hope - so often an injection of electricity comes into a club when a new manager comes in.

"Who better than Alan Shearer? That's the one name that everyone on the Toon wanted at the club and he has answered the call."

League Managers Association chief executive Richard Bevan has expressed his excitement at the news that Alan Shearer will become Newcastle boss.

Newcastle are expected to confirm later on Wednesday that Shearer is to take charge of the club for their final eight games of the season.

The former striker was a fans' favourite during his time as a player at St James' Park and his first foray into management will be closely monitored.

Bevan believes Shearer's appointment is good for the Premier League and will lift spirits on Tyneside.

"I am delighted," Bevan told Sky Sports News.

"We have the G20 leaders round the corner from here trying to boost the economy and Alan's appointment up in Newcastle will have a similar motivating effect.

"I am sure the Newcastle fans will be ecstatic."

No problems

Shearer's lack of experience may be a concern to some supporters but Bevan insists he is fully qualified for the role, both in terms of the coaching badges he has obtained and the success he has previously enjoyed in the North East.

"Alan went to Newcastle back in 1996," said Bevan. "303 games and 206 goals for Newcastle, he knows exactly what the fans need up there.

"Alan has his B licence and his A licence and is in communication with the FA over his pro license so there are no problems at all there.

"It is a very difficult place to manage and I am sure he will be supporting the existing management team there."
