"I have a scan and a meeting with the specialist tomorrow afternoon," he told Sky Sports News. "I'll hopefully know more then, so I'm afraid it's just keeping everything crossed.
"I'm on sticks and my knee is in a brace at the moment to be safe rather than sorry. I'm keeping everything crossed for tomorrow.
"I'll feel better tomorrow if the specialist says I'm alright. If he doesn't, I'll take that when it comes. My glass is always half full, not half empty, so I'm keeping my fingers crossed.
"I think it's just taking in it's happened. As I said, I'm just praying it's not the end.
"I'd dearly love to play a small part in the remaining games. I'm not going to be fit on Saturday, it doesn't take a genius to work that out, but, after that, it all depends on tomorrow."
Shearer could make the bench for the final game depending on his level of fitness although he joked that some of the Newcastle supporters feel he has not been 100 percent over the last half a decade.
"Some of them have said I've only been half-fit for the last five years," he said. "I'll do all I can to play some part in the remaining games but, if I can't, I'll cross that bridge when I come to it."
The former England skipper, speaking at one of his sponsors Continental's coaching courses, is making progress with his future plans regarding management.
"I've just been getting my hours in this year regarding my A-licence," he stated.
"I'm on a residential course in May and June this year to do the first part of my A-licence."
