Newcastle boss Graeme Souness admits Michael Owen is "the type of player we need to be attracting to this club".

Souness wants to bring four more players to St James' Park ahead of the Premiership season with a striker being one of his top priorities.

With England and Real Madrid star Owen currently the subject of speculation over his future, he would appear to fit the bill perfectly with Nicolas Anelka and Mark Viduka also in Souness' thoughts.

Souness has already made attempts to sign Anelka from Fenerbahce - as well as Fulham's Luis Boa Borte - but he has insisted he is not planning a swap deal involving Nicky Butt to sign Viduka from Middlesbrough.

Souness said: "Mark Viduka, Nicolas Anelka and Michael Owen are all top strikers and the facts speak for themselves.

"They are all 20-goals-a-season strikers and they are the types of players we need to be attracting to this club.

"We are obviously in need of firepower and if we were to get that type of player in we would have a very good squad.

"We need four more new players and ideally we would have had them in by now, but certainly we need to do it sooner rather than later."

Souness dismissed suggestions that he was ready to offload the under-performing Butt in favour of Viduka, adding: "Mark is a player I much admire but I have never spoken to Steve McClaren about him."

Håper at Man utd ikkje er interessert i Owen, og at vi byr på han!

Avisene spekulerer om at newcastle har tenkt til bytte Harper + 3 mill pund for Luis Boa Morte.

Steve Harper holds the key to Newcastle's hopes of signing Luis Boa Morte before the start of the new Premiership season.

Fulham expressed an interest in Shay Given's understudy over the weekend after making it clear they had no desire to take Amdy Faye to Craven Cottage.

And a package of Harper plus £3m could finally persuade Chris Coleman to part company with Boa Morte, bringing to an end one of the most protracted transfer sagas of the summer.

The Portuguese international has made it clear he is desperate to move to St James's Park but Fulham are refusing to allow their prize asset to leave London.

A stalemate stretching back to May has ensued but Graeme Souness sought fresh talks with Freddie Shepherd yesterday morning in a final attempt to broker a deal for Boa Morte.

And Harper would jump at the chance to kickstart his career at another Premiership club after seeing a dream move to Celtic fall through earlier this summer.

The Journal understands both the Easington-born goalkeeper and Faye were offered to Fulham on Friday - with either player and £3m deemed a fair exchange for Boa Morte.

The Cottagers informed Newcastle officials they had no interest in adding United's Senegalese midfielder to their first-team squad. However, Harper is an attractive prospect in the wake of Edwin van der Sar's close-season move to Manchester United and Coleman is currently reconsidering his options.

Souness' determination to sign Boa Morte suggests the Scot will eventually get his man and losing Harper, in order to balance a squad in urgent need of attacking reinforcements, is viewed as a necessary evil.

Hugo Viana, meanwhile, was still abroad last night despite a personal order from Shepherd to return to Tyneside following his failure to broker a move to Celta Vigo.

Boa Morte's fellow countryman had hoped to join the La Liga club on a permanent deal, but a week of negotiations have failed to reach a satisfactory conclusion. And Viana faces the prospect of returning to St James's Park in a state of limbo after he admitted there is little prospect of first team football under Souness.

"When I returned to the club for training last month the manager didn't say anything to me and it was clear I would not be involved," explained the former European Young Player of the Year.

"But the chairman has said he will not allow me to go on loan again so a permanent transfer is my only option."

Real Madrid yesterday confirmed Newcastle are leading the chase for the signature of England's Michael Owen - at the same time Manchester United denied an approach for the former Liverpool favourite.

The Magpies are at the head of the queue of those clubs chasing Owen's signature just five days before the club's Premiership opener at Arsenal.

However, the experienced forward has yet to be persuaded that his future lies away from the Bernabeu.

http://skysports.planetfootball.com/list.asp?hlid=298152&cpid=8&CLID=4&lid=&title=Sporting+reject+Douala+bids&channel=premiership

Sitat
Sporting Lisbon claim they have rejected bids from Middlesbrough and Newcastle United for Rodolph Douala.

Middlesbrough have been leading the chase for the Cameroon international, with Boro boss Steve McClaren openly declaring his interest in Douala.

Douala came to the attention of Boro after he tormented them in their meeting in the Uefa Cup last season.

Sporting have already had an earlier bid from Middlesbrough for Douala, as the Portuguese side are holding out for a figure in the region of ?9 million (£6 million) for the pacy winger.

Middlesbrough are thought to have made a new offer for Douala on Wednesday after watching the player in action in their UEFA Champions League qualifier against Udinese.

Douala featured against Udinese in the 1-0 defeat and it means the African would be cup-tied for Boro's Uefa Cup campaign and this could see the Riverside outfit to reconsider their stance.

Sporting admitted earlier this week that another English club had expressed an interest in Douala and now they have revealed the club in question is Newcastle.

Magpies boss Graeme Souness is actively scouring the transfer market for reinforcements after missing out on several top targets including Nicolas Anelka.

Sporting director Raul Meireles has claimed that both Middlesbrough and Newcastle have failed to reach their price tag for Douala.

"It is not news that we had talks with Middlesbrough," said Meireles.

"They made a proposal for the purchase of Douala, but they did not reach the price we wanted, so we refused their offer.

"Also we rejected an offer from Newcastle."

Meireles insists the move is now dead and that Douala was staying in Lisbon.

"He needs stability and by that we want to put a final point to this matter," added Meireles.

Sporting have always kept the stance that they were happy to keep Douala and they are thought to be considering offering him a new deal to extend his stay at the club.
