''He's a tough cookie Souness. As you said, he's not a quitter but sometimes, like when I got the sack at Sheffield Wednesday, sometimes in quieter moments there is a bit of relief,'' Jewell told Sky Sports News.
''Whatever you do doesn't seem to be working. At Sheffield Wednesday the players didn't really seem to want to play for the club.
''I couldn't inspire them no matter what I did. Maybe Graeme feels the same way, he may be relieved at this point but you'll have to ask him about it.''
Souness has yet to outline his plans for the future but should he wish to return to football, Jewell is confident that he will not be short of suitors.
''Obviously he doesn't need the money but he's a born winner, a born competitor and it's difficult to take that out of someone.
''It's not about money but about testing yourself every day, it certainly is for me. If jobs become available and he's interested, I'm sure he'll have a good chance of getting one.''
Jewell has already been earmarked by the bookies as being as a possible successor for Souness but, after what has been a glorious debut campaign for Wigan in The Premiership, he is reticent to talk about a possible departure.
''It's Newcastle this week and England last week but it's all speculation as far as I'm concerned,'' he concluded.
''Newcastle are a fantastic club with fantastic supporters but I'm happy enough with my job here until someone tells me differently one way or another.''
