Graeme Souness last night admitted he is looking to swap Lee Bowyer for Charlton midfielder Danny Murphy.
But Addicks boss Alan Curbishley is understood to be getting cold feet on taking Bowyer back to London, having already expressed his opposition to Murphy (right) moving North.
Souness believes Murphy's apparent unhappiness at The Valley could yet be the key to an exchange deal.
But with Curbishley concerned at the baggage Bowyer would bring with him in returning to his boyhood club, Portsmouth now appear favourites to land the 29-year-old.
However, Souness said: "Danny Murphy is a good football player. People have put two and two together because Charlton are interested in Bowyer and he (Murphy), according to reports, isn't the happiest chappy in the world.
"But that's not a done deal."
Birmingham are also interested in Bowyer, but Portsmouth are a more attractive alternative option for a player looking to move closer to London.
