Newcastle boss Glenn Roeder has revealed that he is frustrated by some of the signings made by previous manager Graeme Souness.
Souness left The Magpies midway through last season but his legacy is living on, with Roeder unable to sell players he admits he would rather not have at the club.
Big-money signings such as Jean-Alain Boumsong and Albert Luque have failed to shine at St James' Park and, although Roeder did not name individuals, the situation is starting to get to him.
"Every Premiership club has players the previous manager signed and the current manager wished they hadn't," he said.
"You are stuck with them because they are on long contracts, earning an amazing amount of money and you can't shift them."
Roeder is still looking for a high-profile replacement for Alan Shearer, and has turned his attentions to Italy following a series of unsuccessful attempts at landing a striker.
Following Juventus' relegation to Serie B, Roeder is reportedly ready to swoop for veteran striker Alessandro Del Piero.
"We are monitoring the situation in Italy, but we are looking everywhere," Roeder explained.
"The biggest concern is we would be taking a player from one of the world's giants who play UEFA Champions League football regularly.
"We need to find whether coming here would appear to be a step down. I need to know whether they have got the motivation and desire to play like they did.
"So I have to tread carefully to see if a player is highly motivated."
