Glenn Roeder is ready to throw his hat into the ring for Southampton's highly-rated 17-year-old left-back Gareth Bale.
And the Newcastle United boss has admitted he is keen on another teenager - Derby County's attacking midfielder player Giles Barnes.
All this came out when Roeder was asked if, as reported last weekend, United were likely to be interested in Queens Park Rangers striker Ray Jones.
For Roeder replied: "The only two players I am interested in from the Championship are Giles Barnes and Gareth Bale.
"They are two outstanding talents and the sort of players we should be looking at. And by admitting our interest we are not giving away any secrets because a lot of top clubs fancy them.
"Barnes is an offensive midfield player and what I would call a truly fine modern-day footballer, while it would not surprise me if Gareth Bale went on to play 100 games for Wales."
Like Theo Walcott before him down at St Mary's Stadium, Bale, who is an expert dead-ball kicker and scored from a free-kick at Sunderland recently, is considered one of the best young talents in the game.
And while Roeder is interested, my information is that Manchester United already have a £3m bid on the table down on the south coast with the promise of another £3m based on appearances.
Significantly, with Roeder saying the only players from the Championship he would like to see in a black-and-white shirt are Bale and Barnes, this can only mean United are not in the hunt for Curtis Davies at West Brom.
Roeder's No 2 Nigel Pearson, of course, knows all there is to know about Davies, who is considered the best central defender outside the Premiership, from his time under Bryan Robson at The Hawthorns. But he is in the £8m bracket and, with a striker his first priority, the United boss will not be in the bidding for Davies.
Nor, as reported this week, will Roeder be making a move for Joey Barton at Manchester City or Greek international winger Stelios along the road at Bolton Wanderers.

Kunne godt tenke meg begge to jeg. Davies hadde også vært en god signering, men jeg er redd han hadde blitt veldig dyr.

Bale blir dyr, men virker lovende. Nå skal også Liverpool, Arsenal og Manchester U være på jakt etter backen, så prisen blir nok høy. Har sett litt av Bale, og han går en meget spennende karriere i møte.
Barnes har jeg sette heller lite av.
