The billionaire owner of Newcastle United was refused entry to one of the city's nightspots for wearing his club's famous black and white shirt.
Mike Ashley headed for Blu Bambu to celebrate the team's 2-0 Carling Cup win against Barnsley on Wednesday.
He was initially told he was breaking the bar's strict dress code but was eventually allowed in after showing a manager his business card.
The entrepreneur then bought drinks for 300 revellers, tipping bar staff £500.
Mark Jones, chairman of Ultimate Leisure, which owns the bar based in the city's Bigg Market area, said "Our assistant manager spotted the football shirt and told Mike he would not be allowed in because of our no team colours policy.
£2,500 bill
"At this point, Mike and Newcastle chairman Chris Mort took out their business cards and explained who they were.
"A quick decision was then taken to modify our policy to allow only football club owners to wear their team's colours.
"They came in and drank in the VIP lounge. They were really friendly and Chris Mort got on the DJ's microphone and announced he and Mike would buy everyone inside a drink."
The duo posed for pictures and chatted to fans until the bar closed at 3am. They racked up a £2,500 bar bill.
Mr Ashley made his fortune through the Sports World company, the UK's largest seller of sporting goods.
The 42-year-old is said to be the UK's 25th wealthiest person and according to the Sunday Times, he is worth £1.9bn.
He completed his £133m takeover of Newcastle United in May.
