Souey's Intertoto Warning
GRAEME Souness has told his Newcastle United squad that their first Intertoto Cup fixture will be their toughest.

The Magpies enter the competition at the Third Round stage on July 16/17, when their likely opponents are FK ZTS Dubnica of Slovakia. A trip to Eastern Europe beckons for the first leg, before a July 23 return encounter at St James' Park.

Souness, however, accepts Dubnica could have an edge in terms of match fitness. They started on June 18 and have already played three Intertoto Cup games so far this summer, dispatching Hungarian side Vasas 2-0 on aggregate in the First Round before recording an emphatic 4-0 away victory in their first leg of their Second Round meeting with Turkish outfit BB Ankaraspor last weekend.

Newcastle scout David Mills watched that game, and it's expected United will again be represented when Dubnica and Ankaraspor meet in the Metsky Stadium on Saturday.

By contrast, the bulk of the Magpies squad only returned to pre-season training on Monday, while some of the international brigade do not report back until the beginning of next week.

Souness told nufc.co.uk: "We expect two hard games against whoever we play and we will be taking nothing for granted.

"It appears at this moment that we will be playing the Slovakians, and in terms of fitness I think they will be ahead of us.

"The Intertoto Cup comes around very early but hopefully it doesn't come around too early for us.

"If we get through this one, then I expect the next round to be easier. And the next one to be easier again because we will be getting fitter and fitter.

"I think the toughest of the three rounds we could play will be this one as we have just started training again a few days ago."

Slovakiske Dubnica gikk videre fra 1. runde etter ha vunnet 2-0 hjemme mot Vasas (Ungarn) og spilt 0-0 borte. De fleste trodde at tyrkiske Ankaraspor skulle bli for sterke i 2. runde, men slovakerne vant den første kampen hele 4-0 på bortebane og
blir dermed Newcastle sin motstander i 3. runde, til tross for hjemmetapet 0-1 lørdag 9. juli.

Dubnica endte på 4. plass i den slovakiske serien i vår og spiller derfor Intertoto Cup.

For Newcastle sin del så spiller verken Scott Parker eller Emre denne kampen, i tillegg så er Ameobi og Bramble skadet.

Jermaine Jenas og Stephen Carr er utelatt fra troppen som reiste til Slovakia da de startet treningen en uke etter de andre fordi de også hadde en lengre sesong grunnet landskamper. Hugo Viana er vraket fra troppen, trolig grunnet et mulig salg til Stuttgart.

Shay Given er med, men starter trolig på benken.
