3-1 over QPR
NEWCASTLE United Under-18s stormed into the Fifth Round of the FA Youth Cup after an outstanding display at Loftus Road.
United took just six minutes to find a breakthrough and, after being fouled on the left, Northern Irish winger Michael McCrudden picked himself up to deliver a whipped free-kick which was turned home by the head of Geordie defender Jeff Henderson from eight yards out.
The visitors were in the ascendancy and Nile Ranger's towering leap should have been rewarded with a goal but his powerful header was kept out by Niki-Lee Bulmer on 13 minutes.
McCrudden then benefited when Michael Wright made a hash of an attempted clearance. The 17-year-old raced through on goal but was unable to take full advantage of the mistake as the Magpies were again thwarted by keeper Bulmer.
Newcastle continued to pour forward and a neat exchange between Conor Newton and McCrudden freed forward-running full-back James Tavernier.
The Bradford-born defender burst into the area but Bulmer came to the Londoners' rescue as he rushed from his line to block.
The pace and precision with which United were moving the ball was causing the hosts all sorts of problems and Shane Ferguson combined with over-lapping full-back Paul Dummett to set up Ranger before the break.
The cross, inch-perfect and begging to be converted, was prodded on target by the United striker but Bulmer somehow leapt to divert the effort onto the post.
QPR rallied after the interval and Max Johnson saved from Josh Parker before Tavernier, well-positioned on the goal-line, headed clear from Antonio German's looping header.
And Tavernier turned provider at the other end on 58 minutes, his deep free-kick controlled and then smashed home from the angle of the six-yard area by James Taylor.
The hosts went on the offensive almost immediately and Johnson, having been virtually untroubled during the first-half, produced a fine, one-handed save from Ed Harris's close-range blast.
But the tie was all but sealed when substitute Dan Williams stabbed low into net from 12 yards after latching onto a long punt downfield.
Andrew Perring pulled one back for Rangers on 79 minutes but his tap-in was scant consolation on a night when the young Magpies had been simply irresistible.
